Vanguard Beta 0 Screenshots - Batch 2
Posted by: Mike in Gaming, Hobbies, Vanguard : Saga of HeroesThe screenshots are centered around showing off the combat system this time, and according to Brad take place in the second Kobold newbie area near Brennan’s Steed, which is targetted at levels 5 to 10.
Thoughts on the Screenshots
Surnames
Here the Sigil team are demonstrating that only your first name needs to be unique, and your surname can be shared. All of the group can be seen with the surname SGODesign. This is a wonderful sight as it means that the Skreefyre family will have a much better chance of staying together.
Defensive Targets
It’s been explained that you can in fact have two targets (a slight innovation in the standard MMO design), the offensive target, and now a defensive target. The screenies show this defensive target beneath your player’s name in it’s own small box, and this represents the person that you can protect. This allows you to use special combat moves to keep them safe if needs be.
Loot
Like EQ1 and World of Warcraft before it, and very much unlike EQ2, the loot returns. We’re shown the loot window, your standard affair of a mini inventory, and Aradune’s inventory throughout all the shots show us that creatures seem to drop the same style of loot as they did in EQ1…whether it makes sense or not. A vast array of armour, weapons and body parts fill Aradune’s inventory, and I can assume that as he kept such stuff, you will be able to sell it off which was a standard MMO way of financing your operations until EQ2 arrived and spat all over the concept of looting.
Goblins
Our first shot of a non-standard MMO race, the Psionisist of the group is a Goblin so we get to see the race in action for the first time. Fairly humanoid, it has a certain ‘evil’ look on it’s face, without falling foul of looking stereotypically evil. I’m still getting over actually seeing a Goblin looking intelligent and devious, after the standard RPG stereotype of a chittering, backstabbing group of animals.
Psionicist
Still not a great deal has been said about this class, but we can see it in action for the first time. The animation seems fairly suitable, with the magic being depicted as being generated by thought alone, and the caster fairly obviously concentrating quite heavily on the target, fingers on temples and eyes screwed shut, or so it appears in one shot.
Kobolds & Mobs
In all their glory in this set, Kobolds here are a reptilian race, clothed in light rags and apparently with enough intelligence to have names and leaders. In fact, we see two named Kobolds during this set, as well as what appears to be a tribe name (’Gwartak’). It also appears that mobs also have an array of combat moves that they can call on in the same way that player characters can.
