While it wasn’t surprising that following the success of last year’s Batman Begins not one but two sequals were commissioned, since then very little has been heard on the subject beyond rumour and conjecture.

So I was very pleased to find out yesterday that ‘Untitled Batman Begins Sequal’ has been officially announced with both a name and a piece of casting news, confirming the rumours on the content of the script.

The Dark Knight as the sequal has been named appears to be based on The Long Halloween trade paperback in much the same way that Batman Begins was based on the infamous Year One story. It charts a pact between Batman, Jim Gordon and new Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent to use their combined talents and influence to help bring down the Clown Prince of Crime…the Joker.

Heath Ledger has been confirmed as having been cast as the Joker, though I’m sure there will be numerous comparisons between him and Jack Nicholson who admittedly turned in one of the greatest Joker performances in the franchise’s history. A lot of people were surprised that the Joker was chosen as the star of the second of the new Batman trilogy though if the rumours are to be believed, it is quite a sensible choice. In the Long Halloween the criminal of the piece was an extremely obscure freak who turned out to be a member of the Falcone family, however with Batman Begins being unable to truly do justice to ‘the Roman’ it is understandable that they’d prefer to use a higher profile villain.

If rumour is to be believed the plot will closely follow the Long Halloween, setting up Two Face (aka Harvey Dent) as the villain of the piece for the third Batman movie. I’m hoping the rumours are true as Two Face is still my favorite of the Batman villains and I loved his story-arc.
