How I Met Your Mother has always been beset by renewal problems as every series draws to a close. It’s a very unique style of comedy, shot using numerous flashbacks through each episode which leads to an inability to film in front of a live studio audience. This departure from standard sitcom format combined with the odd approach to the lives of late-twenty-somethings, that of already being for the most part settled, married, looking for marriage or happy to be single and pursuing a successful career.

This hasn’t helped it get record breaking ratings, though it’s fan base is hardly small and is certainly devoted. This lack of top-of-the-line ratings combined with the fact that the executives at CBS apparently “don’t get it” mean that each series ends with the rumours that it will be axed.

With only two episodes to go in series three, How I Met Your Mother was one of the only shows on US television not to have had it’s fate announced, however tonight we had the big answer. Thanks to the rejuvenating powers of two Britney Spears cameos (Something that many fans and even the cast were suspicious of) CBS have once again announced an eleventh hour reprieve, with series four being given the green light. Our fears at not getting to see the uninterrupted tale of the Mother have been allayed once again.
