What?
What!?
What!!?
The Doctor’s favourite conclusion to each series pretty much sums up my whole reaction to tonight episode, Silence in the Library, though not in a bad way. While in total I don’t think this latest offering from the new show runner Steven Moffatt was quite as scary as “Are you my Mummy?” (or for that matter, ‘Blink‘ and ‘The Lady in the Fireplace‘) when it really got going at the end it looked like having similar promise.
So without further ado…on with the spoilers. Allons-y Alonzo!
So River Song. You may not all have found out her connection with the Doctor however I did earlier this week and I must say the theory certainly fits. It’s nice to know I was right in thinking that it was indeed the Doctor’s sonic screwdriver and not just any old sonic she had, though I am still confused as to that book. Now I’ve heard all the theories and I feel comfortable assuming that it’s the Doctor’s autobiography, especially having both been given a brief glimpse at what the last page holds and hearing yet more rumours (everything seems to be rumours with Who lately) of the fate of this book.
As for the continuing plot-arc, who else found Donna’s question of why River doesn’t know what she looks like more than a little sinister? Also (thanks to the Doctor Who forum for pointing this out) I liked the little hint of two of the young girl’s drawings on the wall, one of a blonde woman, the other of a wolf. Subtle.
As for the scary parts when the episode did finally get into them, there is something just really disturbing about shadows without anything attached to them. This was amplified when they killed “Cannon Fodder #2″ in his suit, I thought that was a very well done piece of B movie horror with the blacked out visor and the data ghost making us think the guy was still alive. As for the data ghosts…deeply disturbing.
All in all a good piece of classic scary Who with some confusing plot arc elements chucked in for good measure.
